Manchester by the Sea is a 2016 American drama film written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan and starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, Gretchen Mol, and Lucas Hedges. The plot follows an uncle who looks after his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2016. It began a limited release on November 18, 2016, before going wide on December 16, 2016. The film received widespread acclaim from critics and has grossed $35 million worldwide on a $8.5 million budget. The film was chosen by American Film Institute and National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2016.[4][5] Casey Affleck won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama. The film is also nominated for numerous awards, including Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress for Williams and Best Screenplay

Plot
Lee Chandler, a quiet and reserved janitor in Quincy, Massachusetts, has his share of stress: there is tension at work, and he manages to get in a bar fight. One morning he receives a message from George, a family friend, that his brother Joe has had a heart attack. Joe dies before Lee can reach the hospital.

Lee goes to Manchester-by-the-Sea to break the news to Joe's son Patrick. Staying in Joe's home while arranging Joe's funeral and looking after Patrick temporarily, he is shocked to learn that Joe named him as Patrick's guardian. To accept this role, Lee would be required to move permanently to Manchester, but he is tortured by memories of the death of his children in a fire he inadvertently caused, his subsequent suicide attempt, and his eventual divorce from his wife Randi.

Frigid weather delays the funeral, forcing Lee to extend his stay in Manchester.

Patrick also spends time with Sandy, a girlfriend whom he plays with in a band, though their attempts at sex are interrupted by her unaware mother Jill, who seems interested in Lee. Patrick attempts to set Lee up with Jill, but Lee is uncomfortable and will not talk to Jill. Patrick thinks Lee is trying to distance himself from him, especially because Lee is doing all he can to wind things up so he can leave Manchester.

Patrick has resumed contact with his mother, Elise, who had been absent from Joe and Patrick's lives due to her alcoholism and drug use. Now newly engaged to an evangelical Christian and presumably sober, Patrick has hopes of living with her but, upon visiting her, is unsettled by her nervous behavior. Elise's fiance asks Patrick to contact Elise only through him in the future.

Lee runs into Randi, who expresses great remorse for her treatment of him after the deaths of their children. She appears eager to reestablish a connection, but Lee finds himself unable to handle the conversation, replying "There's nothing there." She sobs as he walks away.

Lee tells Patrick that he has a new job in Boston, and that George and his wife want to adopt Patrick with arrangements having been made to accommodate him in Joe's will. During a walk after Joe's funeral, Lee tells Patrick that he is searching for a new residence with an extra room, so that Patrick can visit whenever he would like. They go fishing on Joe's boat, as they used to do years earlier.

Production
On September 6, 2014, it was announced that Matt Damon would re-team with filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester by the Sea.[7] They had previously worked together on the 2011 film Margaret.[7] Originally, the film was going to be directed by Damon, but due to scheduling complications, Lonergan was set to direct instead, while Damon would stay involved as producer and lead actor. Lonergan later said that Damon and John Krasinski had brought the idea to Lonergan, and Krasinski was initially going to act in the film.[8] Gigi Pritzker was set to produce and finance the film through her company Odd Lot Entertainment.[7]

Pre-production began on September 8, 2014.[7] In early December 2014, while filming The Finest Hours, Casey Affleck revealed to The Boston Globe that he would replace Damon in the role of Lee Chandler.[9] Affleck officially replaced Damon on January 5, 2015.[10] Michelle Williams was added to the cast on January 9, 2015, as Affleck's character's wife.[11]

In March 2015, it was reported that Sierra / Affinity had come aboard to finance the film, while Kimberly Steward would produce and finance through her company K Period Media, Kevin J. Walsh through his company B Story, Chris Moore through CMP, and Damon through his company Pearl Street Films.[12] The film was executive produced by Josh Godfrey, John Krasinski, Declan Baldwin, and Bill Migliore; Pritzker was no longer attached to produce.[12] Kyle Chandler signed onto the film on February 24, 2015, cast as Affleck's character's older brother.[13] In April 2015, Lucas Hedges joined the cast of the film.[14] It was later revealed Erica McDermott had also joined the cast.[15]

Filming
The film takes place in New England.[13] Principal photography began on March 23, 2015, in the namesake town of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.[16] On the second day, filming took place elsewhere on the North Shore, at locations in Beverly, Gloucester, Swampscott, Lynn, and Salem.[17]

Release

The film had its world premiere on January 23, 2016, at the Sundance Film Festival.[18] Shortly after, Amazon Studios acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film for $10 million, beating out Sony Pictures Classics, Universal Pictures, Lionsgate, and Fox Searchlight.[19][20] This was the second largest disclosed purchase, behind The Birth of a Nation at $17.5 million.[21] Roadside Attractions was later announced to be co-distributing the film with Amazon.[22] The film was screened at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2016,[23] the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2016,[24][25] the New York Film Festival on October 1, 2016,[26][27] and the BFI London Film Festival on October 11, 2016.[28] The film was theatrically released on November 18, 2016.[29]
